Growing up, I’ve heard so many negative things about coffee, that I stayed away from it. Even
now I find people who take pride in saying “I don’t drink coffee”. However, since I’ve done my own research, I’ve come to realize that there are many benefits to drinking coffee.

Here are 5 as shared by By Men’s Health Posted on November 24, 2017

1. Coffee Wakes Up The Brain

As the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world, caffeine’s main effect on the brain is blocking a neurotransmitter known as Adenosine.

Adenosine has an inhibitory effect, thus blocking it increases neural activity and triggers the release of dopamine and norepinephrine. In a study by the British Nutrition Foundation, this increased reaction time, improved mood, memory, vigilance and enhanced general cognitive function.

2. Coffee Improves Physical Performance and Encourages Fat Burning

The American Journal of Physiology found that, as a stimulant for the nervous system, caffeine raises metabolism and increases oxidation of fatty acids. This oxidation causes the fatty acids to mobilize and thus improves athletic performance.

Both the National Centre For Biotechnology Information and the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports found an improved sporting performance of 10-12%.

3. Coffee Is Good for Your Liver

The liver can be one of the more beleaguered organs in the human body being, as it is, in charge of processing alcohol and fructose. The liver is also the only organ in the body that can completely re-generate – almost like it saw us coming.

Cirrhosis is a serious condition where liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue – this happens in advanced alcoholism and hepatitis.

Fear not. Many studies (Norwegian Institute of Public Health, Oslo; University of Milan-Bicocca, Milan; National Nutrition Institute, Rome; Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Oakland CA) have found that drinking around 4 cups of coffee a day can lower the risk of cirrhosis by up to a whopping 80%, and can also reduce liver cancer by around 40%.

4. Coffee Helps You Live Longer

A 24-year study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that coffee consumption had no correlation with negative health effects.

A later Europe-wide study by Imperial College London and France’s International Agency for Research on Cancer found that men who drink the highest amount of coffee had an 12% reduced risk of death, specifically from cancer, cardiovascular disease and digestive and respiratory conditions. Coffee also reduces the risk of type-2 diabetes by 7% per cup, Alzheimer’s and dementia by 60% and Parkinson’s by 32-60%.

5. Coffee Is Full Of Antioxidants and Nutrients

Coffee contains a huge amount of antioxidants. More antioxidants than fruit and vegetables combined, making it the best, most commonly used antioxidant in the Western diet.

On top of that, coffee is full of nutrients in terms of your RDA’s: 6% Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), 11% Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), 2% Niacin (B3) and Thiamine (B1), 3% Potassium and Manganese.

They’re not huge figures but more coffee means more nutrients. Stick the kettle on.
